President of the California Endowment to Address
San Diego City College Youth Worker Conference on Friday, June 1

San Diego, CA…. San Diego City College is home to the only certificate program in youth work at the community college level on the west coast.  On Friday, June 1, Dr. Robert Ross, former Director of San Diego County Health and Human Services and current President of the California Endowment will address the 2nd Annual Youth Worker Conference at the Educational Cultural Complex at 4343 Oceanview Boulevard.

Hosted by the San Diego BEST Initiative, a training, education and professional development program for youth workers, the conference partners include San Diego City College, San Diego Workforce Partnership, and the San Diego Campus of Springfield College.

San Diego BEST Initiative’s mission is to promote training, education, and professional development for youth workers through community-based trainings and through an educational path that begins with a Certificate in youth development work at San Diego City College.  San Diego BEST is one of 26 sites around the country affiliated with the National Training Institute in Community Youth Development located in Washington, D.C.  San Diego City College is the only site west of Kansas City.

Youth workers are individuals who provide services, opportunities, and support to primarily middle school and high school age youth in a variety of settings. Youth-serving organizations around the country and the Department of Labor have identified the need to strengthen the field of youth development through the training, education, and professional development.

Also speaking is Harold Branch III, a 28-year-old youth worker with a life story of struggle and ultimate success.  Branch is a youth specialist and spoken work artist. Youth workers will come from around San Diego County and from a wide variety of settings including after school programs, community based organizations that serve high risk youth, social service entities, criminal justice programs, foster youth programs, community health clinics, etc.

The conference is Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30, with Dr. Ross speaking at 11:30.  The Youth Worker Conference will be held at the Educational Cultural Complex of the San Diego Community College District located at 4343 Oceanview Blvd., San Diego, CA  92113.

Located downtown in the East Village, San Diego City College offers more than 1,500 day, evening, weekend and online courses to 15,000 students each semester.
