"City College, under the leadership of Kathy McGinnis, chairwoman of the health, exercise and science department, nearly doubled its goal of 100 participants, and it exceeded a goal of $1,000 in donations [..to $3,000]. The students, dressed in red and white T-shirts, were among the most enthusiastic participants, with many running instead of walking".

City College Professor Andrea Singer's Making News, Making Education Better - Open House at Florence Elementary The Florence Project (San Diego, CA) - The Florence Project, a service-learning partnership between San Diego City College, UCSD, and San Diego City Schools will host an open house at Florence Elementary on Friday, May 23 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at 3914 First Avenue in Hillcrest. The oldest school in San Diego, Florence Elementary celebrates a new look made possible through a unique education collaborative. In a time of budget cuts and limited support for public education, three institutions successfully achieved their goals by pooling their educational and financial resources and artistic talents. Students from Professor Andrea Singer's City College Graphic Design class and UCSD's Teacher Education Program worked directly with Florence elementary students to develop and implement environmental improvements to the school. Florence Principal Mary Estill earmarked a portion of the school's Proposition MM funds to provide project materials. "My students provide the arts background. Carnen Holzman and her UCSD students help us work with children and learn about education. The Florence students give us the inspiration and ideas for the design work," noted Professor Singer. Holtzman, Director of UCSD's Partner's at Learning Program, collaborated with Singer on the project. "Most exciting is the fact that all the student's work and learning will become a visible part of the school and the neighborhood." Additionally, the Florence Project garnered the support of established San Diego public artist, Lynn Susholtz. A consultant to the project, Susholtz assists with the design, planning, and execution of the project. "It is wonderful to witness the many levels of talent and engagement coming together to design a community-enhancement project," said Susholtz. Currently involved in the execution phase, the elementary school students work directly with the college students to sand, paint and construct the environmental installations. As one of the ultimate goals of the project is to see the Florence Elementary school children attending City College and UCSD in the future, Singer said: "I believe that as elementary students work alongside college role models, the children will gain confidence through their success and be inspired to attend college themselves." The college students receive course credit
for valuable work in the community. "This project gives me a chance to
work on real-life design with a social purpose," says Lindsey Winkler, a
City College Design student. Her classmate Miguel Ruiz added, "The
Florence Project has taught me so much. It has given me lessons that will
carry on in my life." A Florence student happy to be part of the
arts-education project said: For additional information please call
