Important Financial Aid News for 2009-2010

BOG Fee Waiver and Enrollment Fees and Health Fees

The Enrollment fee is now $26 per unit (Note: fees may be increased based on legislative decisions to the State budget). The BOF Fee Waiver will cover all of the enrollment fees for eligible students. All students will have to pay the Health fee each semester. The Health fee is $17 per semester for Fall and Spring and $13 for Summer. Reminder, if students do not pay the Enrollment fee or the Health fee by the payment deadline they will be dropped from all of their classes.

Exception: Students who qualify for a BOG A Fee Waiver due to receiving TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), SSI/SSP (Supplemental Security Income/State Supplemental Program) or General Assistance (Food Stamp assistance alone is not sufficient and does not qualify) are exempt from paying the Health fee. Students applying for a BOG A Fee Waiver under one of the above methods must provide proof of receiving these benefits for either the current month or prior month at the time of BOG A application.

Pell Grant Awards

The maximum Pell Grant for eligible students is $5,350 for the 2009-2010 school year. This is the maximum award for a student enrolled full-time for the Fall and Spring semesters.

Electronic Master Promissory Note (ePMN) for Direct Loans

You can now complete and sign your MPN electronically on the Internet. The electronic MPN (eMPN) may be signed at https://dlenote.ed.gov/empn/index.jsp

The eMPN will now be a multi-year document. It will be valid for up to 10 years at San Diego City College and you will not have to complete and sign a new eMPN every year. You can sign your eMPN at any time even before you submit your loan request.

You will be required to use your U.S. Department of Education issued PIN to complete an electronic MPN. To apply for a PIN, you must go to
http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp

Once you sign the eMPN, the U.S. Department of Education will update their database and send an acknowledgement to our school.  If you request a paper MPN, the U.S. Department of Education will print and send you a copy of your MPN.

Direct Deposit of Financial Aid Disbursements

Students are encouraged to sign up to have their financial aid disbursements deposited directly into their checking or savings account. Sign up through Reg-e to ensure you never miss your financial aid payment.

California High School Exit Exam and Cal Grant Eligibility

Students awarded a Cal Grant must have a high school diploma and pass the California High School Exit Exam. Students will need to provide proof of passing the Exit Exam before a Cal Grant award can be disbursed. Students who do not pass the Exit Exam will not be eligible for a Cal Grant. For more information and eligibility requirements, click on the following link, http://www.sdcity.edu/studentresources/financialaid/calgrant.asp

ACG - Academic Competitiveness Grant

The Federal Government has implemented two new grant programs, the Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) and the National SMART (Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent) Grant. For more information and eligibility requirements, click on the following link,  http://www.sdcity.edu/studentresources/financialaid/acg.asp

Alternative Loans

Alternative loans are private loans through a lending institution and are not part of the federal government programs. Alternative loans are more expensive than federal government Direct Loans or FFEL loans and should only be used when all other options have been exhausted.

You will need to complete a FAFSA application before our office can certify an Alternative Loan application.

Be sure to research all possibilities for scholarships, grants, Work Study, and federal loan programs before borrowing from an alternative loan program.

You are always free to choose the lender of your choice. Choose the loan that best suits your needs and remember to borrow only what you need!
