Student Health Services

City College's Student Health Services mission is to provide medical and psychological care, services and education in a culturally competent manner to enhance student's ability to both advocate and care for themselves in order to advance their health and that of the campus community. Student Health Services' mission is in concert with City College's mission in assisting the student to maintain wellness, stay in school and complete educational goals. The City College Student Health Services program consists of both medical and mental health components.  The medical/nursing program provides preventive and primary health care with referrals to community resources as needed.  Student Health supports the success of students by attending to their physical and emotional well-being through the following services:

Nursing Assessment & Management: A registered nurse works with you to determine the best course of care. This may include an appointment with the physician, nurse practitioner or referral to community resources. It may include nursing care, education or health counseling.

Laboratory Services: Laboratory tests are provided at low cost, as ordered by the physician or nurse practitioner.

First Aid/Emergency Care: First aid is provided for minor problems.  For severe or life-threatening issues, emergency care is accessed through the Emergency Transport System in San Diego. Back to the Top

General Medical Care: Ambulatory medical care is provided by appointment with the Student Health Services physician and nurse practitioners. This includes history and physical assessment of skin, muscle, joint, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and other problems. Medical referrals are made to the community as indicated.

Physical Exam: A complete examination includes a medical history and assessment by the doctor or nurse practitioner. Bring any required forms and immunization records with you to your appointment.

TB Tests: TB (Tuberculosis) skin testing requires two visits, the first to administer the test and the second, which must be within 48 hours, to read the results. Tests are administered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Tests results are then read on Wed, Thursday, Friday and Monday, respectively. Back to the Top

Immunizations: All students are strongly encouraged to obtain immunizations against communicable diseases, as recommended by public health authorities. If a student is unsure whether he or she is up-to-date, visit Student Health Services to review your vaccination record and schedule.

  • Tetanus/ Diphtheria: All adults need a tetanus booster at least every 10 years.

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Adults born after 1957 should show proof of 2 MMR vaccinations OR laboratory confirmation of immunity against these diseases (known as an MMR titer).  Persons born before 1957 need only one MMR vaccination OR proof of immunity through confirmed lab testing.
  • Influenza: The "flu shot" is recommended every fall for those individuals considered high-risk for flu and it's complications.
  • Other common immunizations include Hepatitis A and B, Varicella (chickenpox) and Pneumococcal vaccine.  These are vaccines not routinely carried at SHS but which are available at area clinics and the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency at (619) 515-6770. Referral lists for a clinic near you are located in the SHS office in A116.

Nurse, physician and nurse practitioner visits are free for all enrolled students.   Some medical procedures may require a fee. City College may require health consultations and physical examinations as deemed necessary.

Student Accident Insurance /Claims The Student Accident Insurance Plan provides coverage for on-campus or college-related injuries. This insurance covers most reasonable charges.
