Tutorial/Learning Center
Free tutoring in most subjects is available to students.

The Tutorial/Learning Center is located in Room L214 on the second floor at the west end of the library building. The Center is dedicated to providing high quality academic support to students. The goal is for each student to become an independent learner, who will succeed in the collegiate setting. Tutors are carefully selected and professionally trained. Many are bilingual to help with language barriers. They provide FREE individual and small group tutoring in most subject areas. All City and ECC College students may sign up for ongoing appointments, or come in on an as-needed, walk-in basis. Special assistance is provided for vocational, DSPS, CalWORKS and EOPS students. FREE one-hour academic skill workshops are also offered which strengthen learning skills such as note taking, test-taking, and memory and time management. See the TLC web site here.Back to the Top

Math Center
The Math Center provides both walk-in tutoring and self-paced math courses. It offers students several ways to complete their remedial math requirements (Math 38 - Pre-Algebra, Math 46 - Elementary Algebra and Geometry, and Math 96 - Intermediate Algebra and Geometry). Math Center Programs provide students with scheduling flexibility, individualized pacing, a variety of learning modalities, and the ability to overcome pre-requisites or course repetition blocks. The three programs are on-campus Math Center courses, Online Self-Paced courses and Online Refresher courses.

The Math Center, located in L-208, (619) 388-3580, is open: Mon - Thurs 10am - 6pm; Fri 9am - 3pm, Fall 2009. Services include walk-in tutoring for City College students with a valid student ID, self-paced on-campus courses, and online access for students in self-paced online Math 46 and 95 courses or Math 15 refresher courses.

On-campus self-paced courses: The self-paced courses provide students with flexible alternatives to the traditional lecture courses for Math 38, 46, and 96. The courses are open-entry/open-exit and self-paced. Students can complete a course in a few weeks, or extend the course up to nearly two semesters. A variety of learning resources are available including video lectures and computer tutorials keyed to the student's textbook, live and video-based workshops, computer-based testing for immediate feedback, and onsite tutors. Minimum weekly attendance and purchase of a custom textbook is required.

Online self-paced courses (Math 46 & 95) are similar to the on-campus self-paced courses with the following differences. All course materials, assessments, and communications take place online except for the on-campus final exam. Students purchase an access code for $69.95 instead of a textbook. Online tutors participate in the online discussions, email, and are available for online chat sessions. Students in these courses are welcome to use the Math Center computers to access their course and on-campus tutors on a walk-in basis.

Online refresher Math 15 courses are ideally suited for students who have not taken math for a long time and want to refresh their skills in order to be successful in other courses. Math 15 courses offer students a one-unit, credit/no-credit way to refresh their math skills without the commitment, cost and academic risk a full course would entail. However, they can also be used when students are blocked from re-taking a course by a repetition violation or to waive a course prerequisite. Math 15 courses are open-entry, self-paced and fully online. Math 15 students are also welcome to use the Math Center computers to access their course and work with on-campus tutors on a walk-in basis. Also, Math 15 courses require no pre-requisite, can be taken alongside other math classes and can be re-taken several times. Students purchase a license to access the course materials, $30 for 6 weeks, $45 for 11 weeks, etc.
