(Salamanca,
Spain
and London, England
require a 2.5), completion of 12
college-level units at the end of the semester prior to
departure, and sometimes a student conduct review. |

City College plans to offer its 7th intensive Spanish immersion
program to Cuernavaca, Mexico, the City of Eternal
Spring, during SUMMER 2010. There is a four-week program
and a two-week program. See the

for the four-week program. Participants will have the choice of enrolling in Spanish 101,
102, 201, 202, 210 or 211 while living with a Mexican host
family where three daily meals will be served. Excursions to
Mexico City, Teotihuacan and Puebla will be included. See

two-week program. Participants will be placed in
the appropriate Spanish class based on the results of a
personal assessment and receive independent study credit.
Three daily meals will be provided by a Mexican host family.
The weekend excursion to Mexico City and Teotihuacan is
included. City College Spanish instructor Brenda Munoz will
accompany the group. A service learning opportunity in a
community service project will also be available.

The

City College’s second study abroad program to Buenos
Aires, Argentina for Fall 2010. Spend
10 weeks in this European-style city, often compared to
Paris, that spawned the tango and the charismatic Evita
Peron. Prof. Steve Bouscaren will teach Anthro 102 (Intro to
Physical Anthropology), Anthro 103 (Intro to Cultural
Anthropology), Anthro 215 (Cultures of Latin America) and be
the instructor of record for Anthro 265C, the required
Argentine Life and Culture class. On-site instructors will
teach Music 109 (World Music), History 115B (History of the
Americas II), and Spanish 101, 102, 201, and 202. Two of the
Anthropology classes will begin in San Diego for 2 weeks
prior to departure. Excursions and field trips will enhance
your studies. Participants will have the choice of living
with Argentine host families and receive two daily meals or

Summer intensive language program in
Cuernavaca, Mexico |
Study abroad programs are available every fall and spring semester for a
period of up to 12 weeks. Past programs have taken place in countries
such as the
United Kingdom,
Italy, Costa Rica, Australia, Argentina,
Spain ( Salamanca, Madrid, and Barcelona) and
France in conjunction with the local study abroad consortium or
in partnership with other community colleges in California.
Short-term study abroad programs have also been offered in such
locations as Madrid,
Spain;
Cuernavaca, Mexico (four
weeks and
two weeks). and
Ensenada,
Mexico.
Students on these programs study in different countries around the world
in order to develop global competencies and to increase cultural
awareness while making progress towards completion of academic goals.
Classes are taught by California community college instructors at host
institutions abroad. Field trips, excursions, and visits to sites of
cultural and historical interest are components of the program. Housing
arrangements include family homestays, student apartments, and/or
residence halls.
Financial aid for semester programs is available to students who
qualify.
Scholarship Opportunities
A special scholarship sponsored by the Department of
State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
called the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship is
available on a nationwide competitive basis to
students who are in good academic standing, are U.S.
citizens, and who are eligible for a Federal Pell
Grant. This prestigious and substantial scholarship
is designed to assist students who would not
normally be able to study abroad to do so. For more

The SAN DIEGO FOUNDATION offers study abroad
scholarships to City College students for fall,
spring and summer study abroad for specific

Office disseminates information about opportunities abroad (study, work,
internships, volunteering, scholarships) to faculty, staff, and students.
It also develops and implements short-term study abroad programs for City
College, and participates in the development of semester-long
study abroad programs as part of the countywide study abroad consortium.

abroad program to Barcelona, Spain. Spend 9 weeks in the
beautiful regional capital of Catalonia with its splendid art
nouveau architecture by Antoni Gaudi and its charming strolling
avenue Las Ramblas! Students will register at Southwestern College
in order to participate in this program. Prof. Alejandro Orozco from
Southwestern College will teach Philosophy 101 (Intro to
Philosophy), Philosophy 103 (Logic & Critical Thinking), Philosophy
106 (World Religions), and Humanities 104 (Intro to Humanities: Arts
and Ideas). Professor Carla Kirkwood, also from Southwestern College
will teach Art 130/Telemedia133 (History of Film as Art), Theatre
100 (Survey of Drama), and be the instructor of record for the
required Humanities 295 class (Spanish Life and Culture). Spanish
101 and 102 will be taught by on-site instructors. Course numbers
are Southwestern College course numbers. Classes will begin in San
Diego for 4 weeks prior to departure. Excursions and field trips

interesting and exciting capitals of the world! Students
will register at Citrus College in order to participate in
this program. Prof. Jack Call from Citrus College will teach
Philosophy 101 (Great Religions of the World), Philosophy
106 (Intro to Philosophy), Philosophy 110 (Logic), and be
the instructor of record for the required History 120 class
(British Life and Culture). Prof Charles Hood of Antelope
Valley College will teach English 110 (Intro to Women’s
Lit), English 252 (Intro to English Lit), English 291 (Film
as Literature) and English 294 (Intro to Shakespeare). Prof.
Ramon Vasconcellos of Barstow Community College will teach
History 104 (History of World Civilization since 1500),
History 107 (Political & Social History of the U.S. to
1876), History 108 (Political & Social History of the U.S.
from 1876 to the present), and Economics 101 (Principles of
Economics). Eight on line courses are also available from
which students can choose one. Course numbers are Citrus
College course numbers. Excursions and field trips will
enhance your studies. Participants will live with host
