The International Education Office will be closed from June 24 - the first week of August 2009:

  • Students ready to submit an application to study in Florence, Italy for Spring 2010 should contact Edwin Hiel at ehiel@sdccd.edu or 619.388.3036.

  • Applications for Fall 2009 to London, England will be accepted until the third week in June to still participate in the group airfare. Contact Lynn Jamison at Citrus College at ljamison@citruscollege.edu or 626.914.8560. After that date, students can still apply but must arrange their own airfare.

Who's Eligible?

Right! Eligibility requirements for most programs are a 2.0 GPA (Salamanca, Spain and London, England require a 2.5), completion of 12 college-level units at the end of the semester prior to departure, and sometimes a student conduct review.

 


Right! Brochures and application forms are now  available for the Fall 2009 semester in London, England.  Students will register at Citrus College in Glendora, CA in order to participate in this program. Citrus College classes offered will be English 101 (Introduction to Shakespeare), English 252 (Introduction to English Literature II), English 291 (Film as Literature), History 120 (British Life and Culture – required for all participants), Anthropology 210 (Cultural Anthropology), Anthropology 216 (Sex and Gender in Cross Cultural Perspective), Anthropology 212 (Physical Anthropology), Psych 101 (Introduction to Psychology), Art 100 (Art History and Appreciation – Fundamentals), Art 101 (Art History and Appreciation – Ancient), Art 105 (Art History and Appreciation (20th century), Art 111 (Beginning Drawing), Art 131 (Beginning Painting), and Art 134 (Beginning Watercolor). Live with a British host family and get breakfast 5 days a week or in a student apartment (no food included). Excursions and field trips will enhance your studies. Right! PENDING APPROVAL: City College's 7th intensive Spanish language program in Cuernavaca, Mexico, the City of Eternal Spring, during SUMMER 2010. During the four-week program, participants will have the choice of enrolling in Spanish 101, 102, 201, 202, 210 or 211 while living with a Mexican host family where three daily meals will be served. Excursions to Mexico City, Teotihuacan and Puebla will be included. A City College Spanish instructor will accompany the group. A service learning opportunity will also be available. During the two-week program, students will be placed in the appropriate Spanish class based on the results of a personal assessment and receive independent study credit. Study Abroad With San Diego City College

 

 
Summer intensive language program in Cuernavaca, Mexico

Study abroad programs are available every fall and spring semester for a period of up to 12 weeks in countries such as the United Kingdom,  Italy, Costa Rica,  Australia, Argentina, Spain (1) , Spain (2) and France  in conjunction with the local study abroad consortium or in partnership with other community colleges in California. Short-term study abroad programs have also been offered in such locations as Madrid, Spain; Cuernavaca (four weeks and two weeks). and Ensenada, Mexico. Students on these programs study in different countries around the world in order to develop global competencies and to increase cultural awareness while making progress towards completion of academic goals. Classes are taught by California community college instructors at host institutions abroad. Field trips, excursions, and visits to sites of cultural and historical interest are components of the program. Housing arrangements include family homestays, student apartments, and/or residence halls.

Financial aid for semester programs is available to students who qualify.

Scholarship Opportunities
A special scholarship sponsored by the Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs called the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship is available on a nationwide competitive basis to students who are in good academic standing, are U.S. citizens, and who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. This prestigious and substantial scholarship is designed to assist students who would not normally be able to study abroad to do so. For more information, please go to http://www.iie.org/gilman. Deadlines are in early October for spring study abroad and in early April for fall study abroad.
The SAN DIEGO FOUNDATION offers study abroad scholarships to City College students for fall, spring and summer study abroad for specific programs. Scholarships are also available through the Student Affairs Office in D-106 or go to www.sdcity.edu/scholarships  and students are encouraged to research the availability of others.

The International Education Office disseminates information about opportunities abroad (study, work, internships, volunteering, scholarships) to faculty, staff, and students. It also develops and implements short-term study abroad programs for City College, and participates in the development of semester-long study abroad programs as part of the countywide study abroad consortium. Other college international education activities are also coordinated by this office.

Right! Brochures, registration forms, student conduct release form, and student information and release form are now available for the Spring 2010 study abroad program to Florence, Italy. Spend 10 weeks in the city that represents the Renaissance in all its glory! Students will register at Southwestern College in order to participate in this program. Prof. Vivien Vaughan from Southwestern College will teach Humanities 101 (Humanities through the Arts), Art 149 (Women in Western Art History), and Art 151 (Renaissance to Modern). Professor Chuck Carter from Cuyamaca College will teach English 115 (Reading and Composition), English 116 (Critical Thinking and Composition), English 260 (Mythology and Literature), and English 265 (Literature and Film). First and second semester Italian will be taught by on-site instructors. All students are required to take Humanities 299 (Italian Life and Culture). Course numbers are Southwestern College course numbers. Classes will begin in San Diego for 3 weeks prior to departure.

Prof. Malia Serrano from Grossmont College will teach Art 100 (Art Appreciation), Art 140 (History of Western Art I: Prehistoric to 1250 A.D.), and Art 141 (History of Western Art II: 1250 A.D. to present time). Professor Paul Carmona from Cuyamaca College will teach Humanities 120 (European Humanities), Philosophy 110 (General Introduction to Philosophy), Music 110 (Great Music Listening), and Religious Studies 120 (World Religions).  French 120 and 121 will be taught by on-site instructors. All students are required to take Humanities 299 (French Life and Culture). Course numbers are Cuyamaca College course numbers. Classes will begin in San Diego for 3 weeks prior to departure.
