Brochures and registration forms will soon be available for
the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Spanish
language and Mexican culture in Ensenada, Mexico
during spring break 2009 (April 5 – 11, 2009)!! Live with a
Mexican host family and receive three daily meals while
receiving Spanish independent study credit. A visit to a
Kumeyaay Indian community is included. This opportunity
is perfect for those who cannot leave home for an extended
period of time and want to keep expenses low yet still want
to gain the benefits of a study abroad experience. Fill in
gaps in your knowledge, practice what you have already
learned (or start from scratch), and come back to San Diego
being more conversant in Spanish for academic, personal
and/or professional purposes!
Brochures, application forms, the calendar, timeline and
financial aid fact sheet are now available for the
Spring 2009 semester in Salamanca, Spain. Spend 12 weeks
in the Oxford of Spain! Students will register at Citrus
College in Glendora, CA in order to participate in this
program. Citrus College classes offered will be Philosophy
101 (Great Religions of the world), Phil 106 (Intro to
Philosophy), Humanities 102, Humanities 110 (Humanities in
the 20th century), Art 100 (Art History and Appreciation –
Fundamentals), Art 101 (Art History and Appreciation
–Ancient), Art 103 (Art History and Appreciation –
Renaissance to Rococo), Art 104 (Art History and
Appreciation – 19th century), 4 levels of Spanish +
conversation) and the required History 127 (Spanish
Civilization). Live with a Spanish host family and get 2
meals daily 5 days a week or in a student apartment (no food
included). The program will begin in Madrid and include a
city tour. Excursions and field trips will enhance your

Study abroad
programs are available every fall and spring semester for a period of up
to 12
weeks in countries such as the
United Kingdom,
Italy,
Costa Rica,
Australia, Argentina,
Spain,
and
France
in conjunction with the local study abroad consortium or in partnership
with other community colleges in California.
Short-term
study abroad programs have also been offered in such locations as
Madrid,
Spain;
Cuernavaca
(four weeks
and
two weeks).
and
Ensenada,
Mexico. Students on these programs study in different countries around the world
in order to develop global competencies and to increase cultural
awareness while making progress towards completion of academic goals.
Classes are taught by California community college instructors at host
institutions abroad. Field trips, excursions, and visits to sites of
cultural and historical interest are components of the program. Housing
arrangements include family homestays, student apartments, and/or
residence halls.
Financial aid for semester programs is available to students who
qualify.
Scholarship Opportunities
A special scholarship sponsored by the Department of
State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs
called the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship is
available on a nationwide competitive basis to
students who are in good academic standing, are U.S.
citizens, and who are eligible for a Federal Pell
Grant. This prestigious and substantial scholarship
is designed to assist students who would not
normally be able to study abroad to do so. For more

early October for spring study abroad and in early
April for fall study abroad.
The San Diego Foundation offers study abroad
scholarships to City College students for fall,
spring and summer study abroad for specific

Scholarships are also available through the Student

are encouraged to research the availability of
others.
The International Education
Office disseminates information about opportunities abroad (study, work,
internships, volunteering, scholarships) to faculty, staff, and students.
It also develops and implements short-term study abroad programs for City
College, and participates in the development of semester-long
study abroad programs as part of the countywide study abroad consortium.
Other college international education activities are also coordinated by
this office.

City College’s 7th annual intensive Spanish language program
in Cuernavaca, Mexico, the city of eternal spring.
During the four-week program, participants will be able to
enroll in Spanish 101, 102, 201, 202, 210 or 211 while
living with a Mexican host family where three daily meals
will be served. Excursions to Mexico City, Teotihuacan and
Puebla are included. A City College Spanish instructor will
accompany the group. During the two-week program, students
will be placed in the appropriate Spanish class based on the
results of a personal assessment and receive independent

the Spring 2009 study abroad program to Florence, Italy.
Spend 12 weeks in this stellar Renaissance city which houses
many of the major artistic masterpieces of that era.
Students will register at Cuyamaca College in order to
participate in this program. Dr. Marion de Koning from
Grossmont College will teach Art 100 (Art Appreciation), Art
140 (Western Art I - Ancient to Gothic), and Art 141
(Western Art II - late Gothic to early 20th Century). Dr.
Peter Utgaard from Cuyamaca College will teach Humanities
110 (Principles of the Humanities), History 105 (Early
Western Civilization), History 106 (Modern Western
Civilization), and History 275 (Historical Period - The
Renaissance). Italian 120 and 121 will be taught by on-site
instructors. Course numbers are Cuyamaca College course
numbers. All students are required to take Humanities 299
(Italian Life and Culture). Excursions and field trips will
enhance your studies. Participants will live in shared
student apartments (no meals included) or with Italian host
