 Faculty Learning Community
Strategies for Classroom Success (SCS)

Objectives

1.      Introduce faculty to Dr. Vincent Tinto’s five necessary conditions for student retention and success (The Tinto 5)

2.      “Capture” faculty strategies for classroom success, in the context of The Tinto 5, in a format (template) that is focused, concise and appealing, such that the strategies appear “doable” to others.
(Note: All faculty are invited to participate and contribute 1 strategy to this effort)

3.      Disseminate SCS models online in an organized, interactive format that allows users flexibility for browsing according to topic areas and personal interests, including links to existing Tinto research and other online resources.

Expected Outcomes

Promotion of community building and enhanced campus culture through the development of a “collective-knowledge” resource

Identification and celebration of existing faculty strategies for classroom success – across all disciplines, in the context of The Tinto 5

Increased campus awareness of Tinto research on student retention and success

Promotion of a multi-level, campus-wide dialogue on student retention and success

Sharing of successful classroom strategies within departments and across disciplines

Enhanced campus-wide appreciation and understanding of classroom “experience”

Foundation for additional faculty learning activities

Flexibility for on-going development and “capture” of faculty strategies, as needed

Support for Student Learning Outcomes initiative
