Transfer Success Program courses are designed to increase the understanding of the African American experience through cultural readings, discussion and activity. Through classroom learning, self-exploration and community events, participants in the TSP will learn African-American perspectives, past and present, gain lifelong friendships and, most importantly, be successful.

 

Course Descriptions

English 43 – English Review
Advisory:
Assessment Skill Level W3. This course is designed for native speakers of English. ESL students should enroll in ESOL 19, 20, 21, 22, 30, 31, 32, or 40 as recommended by the placement test for non-native English speakers; or ENGL 042 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or assessment Skill Level R4.

Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students with previous credit for ENGL 050.

This course is designed for students who need review of and practice with writing unified paragraphs and purposeful basic compositions. In this course students develop knowledge of the writing process as well as knowledge of grammatical structures to compose clear and complete sentences, paragraphs, and short essays. Students also read texts as the basis for writing and develop critical thinking skills necessary for success in college courses. (FT). Not Applicable to Associate Degree, pre-collegiate basic skills, English as a Second Language.

 

Math 35 – Pre Algebra
Advisory:
MATH 032 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or assessment Skill Level M20.

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of arithmetic operations, their applications, and an introduction to some elementary topics in beginning algebra. The course covers arithmetic operations on integer, rational, and decimal numbers, fractional, percent and decimal notation, introduction to algebraic expressions, solving equations and graphing, ratios and proportions, perfect squares and their square roots, elementary topics in geometry, systems of measurement, and monomial arithmetic. (FT). Not Applicable to Associate Degree, pre-collegiate basic skills, English as a Second Language.

 

Personal Growth 140 – Life Skills and Personal Adjustment
Advisory:
English 51 and English 56, each with a grade of “C” or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5.

Students learn and apply personal achievement principles, coping strategies, and life skills that develop each area of emotional, social, educational, and professional life. Emphasis is on gaining mastery in self-esteem and compassion, self-discipline, self responsibility, self-assertion, and living a consciously balanced life in pursuit of defined educational, career, and life goals. (FT) Associate Degree Credit & transfer to CSU and/or private colleges and universities.

 

Black Studies 104 – Black Psychology
Advisory:
ENGL 051 or ENGL 056 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or assessment Skill Levels W5/R5.

This course is an introduction to psychological concepts and principles as they relate to African American behaviors and lifestyles. Emphasis is placed on comparing Euro-American theories as they have been traditionally applied to African Americans with contemporary Afri-centric theories and the ways in which they may be applied to create a greater understanding of the behaviors, lifestyles and psychological needs of African Americans. (FT). UC Transfer Course List. Associate Degree Credit & transfer to CSU and/or private colleges and universities. BLAS 104 and PSYC 101 combined: maximum credit, one course.
