Transfer FAQ'S

Get Ready to Transfer!

Many universities require you to submit documents, take assessment exams, attend orientations, or meet other requirements before you enroll. It's also a good idea to apply for financial aid and scholarships at your university as well as for graduation and/or GE certification from City College before your transfer.

Petition to Graduate from City

Graduation from City College is not automatic. You must file for graduation in order to receive an Associate Degree or Certificate of Achievement at the Evaluations desk in room A-110. Click here for more information.

File for GE Certification from City

GE Certification is a legal agreement between City College and a California public university (UC or CSU) that assures all of your lower division general education requirements have been satisfied. You should file for GE certification once you are finished (or about to finish) all of your transfer general education courses (CSU GE or IGETC patterns) and know which university you will be attending. Apply at the Evaluations desk in room A-110.

Apply for Financial Aid

Most universities recommend you apply for financial aid between January 1 and March 2 for the upcoming school year. Click here for more information about financial aid.

Attend Graduation

You don't have to attend City College graduation to transfer or to receive a degree or certificate, but it's a great way to celebrate and be publicly recognized for your achievement. You earned it!

Find Out How to Get There

Are you using public transportation to commute to your new university? It's a good idea to figure out your best route to the university now, before you start attending. Click here for the San Diego Transit website or visit the website for public transportation near your new university.

Submit Intent to Register and Transcripts

After offering you admission, most universities require you to send a statement of intent to register (SIR), official transcripts, a deposit, and sometimes other materials. See your university admission paperwork for more information. To order transcripts from the San Diego Community College District, visit the Records Office in room A-109 or click here.

Attend New Student Orientation

Most universities offer a new student orientation day where you tour the campus, learn about services and requirements, receive academic advising, etc. See your university admission paperwork for more information.

Send Final Transcripts

You are usually required to send your university a separate transcript showing your final grades shortly after the end of the semester. Transcripts are usually sent directly from your community college to the university. To order transcripts from the San Diego Community College District, visit the Records Office in room A-109 or click here.

Complete Assessment Tests

Some universities require transfer students to complete assessment tests either prior to enrollment or during their first semester or year of attendance. See your university admission paperwork for more information.

Find Housing

Are you going to live on campus? If so, you will need to apply for campus housing. See your university admission paperwork or the university website for more information. If you are living off campus you may need to start searching for housing in the local community. Most universities have housing assistance offices to help you.

Meet Immunization Requirements

Some universities require you to provide documentation of immunizations against certain communicable diseases, like measles or rubella. See your university admission paperwork for more information.
