General Education Patterns

General Education (GE) consists of courses selected from a variety of disciplines, intended to provide a well-rounded or "liberal arts" education. GE is a required part of every Associate or Bachelor degree.

Community college students have a variety of transfer GE patterns to choose from. Make sure to select a pattern that is accepted by the university you plan to attend.

Some private universities accept IGETC or CSU GE, but many have their own general education pattern. These are listed on the prep-for-major courses page.

Students who complete an entire transfer general education pattern (IGETC or CSU GE) can get certified as having completed all lower division general education coursework. Click here for more information.

IGETC (PDF file)
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is accepted by all CSU campuses and most UC campuses and majors. (Exceptions are noted on the sheet.)

CSU GE (PDF file)
The California State University General Education - Breadth pattern is accepted by all CSU campuses.

Associate Degree GE (PDF file)
General education requirements for earning an Associate Degree from City College.
Not required for transfer.

If you do not know which university you want to attend, it's a good idea to start working on the IGETC pattern, as this is accepted by a wide variety of universities.
