Accounting Clerks keep financial and business records for public and private organizations.  They post entries in ledgers, prepare data for computer input, and are responsible for accounts payable and receivable, payrolls, bank deposits, purchase orders, expense reports and sales commissions.  Bookkeepers record day-to-day business transactions from source documents on business accounting forms, either by hand or by computer.  Bookkeepers periodically balance accounting books and compile summary reports and statements showing a company's financial condition.  In smaller offices they may also prepare payrolls, bill customers, answer telephones and do general office work.

Employment Outlook: As computer dominate all aspects of record keeping, accounting clerks and bookkeepers with industry experience and computer expertise will be much in demand.  Some 103,300 job openings are projected in California  over the next 10 years with 264,860 bookkeepers and accounting clerks employed.

Experience: Community College coursework in accounting and bookkeeping. Math and computer science courses and on-the-job training while in school are useful.  Ongoing coursework is required to stay current in this field.
