Business Studies: Accounting

Why City College:
  • Our program teaches students all aspects of accounting and bookkeeping needed for entry level jobs.
  • Student internships with a student-run on campus business provide hands-on accounting and bookkeeping experience.
  • Each certificate of completion in the Small Business Accounting program includes three to four classes that prepare students as tax preparers or bookkeepers.
  • Certificates of completion can build to an associate degree.
  • Students can take theory-based accounting classes for transfer to four-year institutions.
  • The Small Business resource Center, a computerized lab to develop business plans and research information, connects students to real world business resources via the Internet.
  • Enrollment fees are lowest of any college, university or technical school in California.

The City College Small Business Accounting program prepares students as small business bookkeepers and entry-level tax preparers. The associate degree in small business prepares students for entry level jobs as account clerks, accounting technicians, tax aides, bookkeepers and accounting trainees.

Excellent Opportunities for Men and Woman:
Accounting expertise offers women and men good money as entry-level tax preparers and bookkeepers and excellent salaries as certified public accountants (CPAs).  Work can be done at home and/ or part-time.

Departmental Tips:

Accounting students have strong computer and analytical skills; they enjoy solving problems and meeting deadlines.

Accounting 150, Computerized Accounting, teaches students Excel as well as a general ledger accounting application.  Students should take it before trying to get work experience in accounting.

Accounting 102, is not a prerequisite for Accounting 116A, but is recommended as excellent preparation for 116A.

Accounting 128A and 128B, Small Business Accounting Recordkeeping and Payroll, are "hands on" courses tailored for individuals currently working for small businesses and those planning to work for small businesses upon graduation.
