Behavioral Sciences: Alcohol & Other Drug Studies

Why City College:
  • The Alcohol & Other Drug Studies program at City College is the only fully state-accredited Community College program of its kind in San Diego.
  • Students who successfully complete the program are immediately eligible for entry-level jobs as counselors.
  • Course offerings are flexible to fit busy schedules. Students may take classes days only, nights only, or a combination of day and evening classes.
  • More San Diego alcohol and drug counselors receive training at City College than at any other college in San Diego County.
  • Enrollment fees are lowest of any college, university or technical school in California.

The Behavioral Sciences/Alcohol and Other Drug Studies Program at City College leads to a Certificate of Achievement in 33 units (11 courses) or to an Associate Degree in Behavioral Sciences with 27 additional course units. Students may specialize in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or Anthropology. Courses include: Introduction to Chemical Dependency, Physiology and Pharmacology of Psychoactive Drugs, Chemical Dependency Case Management, Chemical Dependency Family Counseling Techniques, Group Dynamics in Chemical Dependency, and a Chemical Dependency internship.

Excellent Opportunities for Men and Woman:
Both men and women are needed as substance abuse counselors. Great opportunities exist in this field for both sexes.

Departmental Tips:

  • The Program includes a 255-hour clinical field internship where students work in a community rehabilitation centers for a semester. Internships often result in jobs.
  • Students should start their AODS certificate program by taking General Psychology (Psych 101) and Introduction to Sociology (Soc. 101).
  • Full-time students can complete  the certificate program in one academic year (two semesters and a summer session).
  • Students recovering from substance abuse problems in their own lives are welcome in the AODS program. Young people with one or two years of sobriety are especially employable for work in adolescent treatment facilities.
