Computer business technology training prepares secretaries, executive secretaries, legal secretaries, office managers and administrative assistants in the clerical and administrative tasks needed to keep a modern office running smoothly. Secretaries may schedule appointments, screen phone calls, welcome visitors, type, file and transcribe documents, open and review correspondence, answer letters, handle confidential information and files, keep minutes at meetings, prepare reports and documents, maintain official records, set up meetings and plan conferences. Legal secretaries prepare and file specialized court documents. Administrative assistants perform routine tasks for executives: screen job applicants, orient new employees, plan training programs, make sure decisions are carried out and attend department meetings.

Experience:
Secretaries: an associate degree and/or 2-3 years experience; good computer & word processing skills.
Legal secretaries: Computer and secretarial training and experience plus courses in business law, legal stenography, dictaphone, shorthand, legal terminology and bookkeeping.
Administrative assistants:
at least two years of responsibility as secretary; in- depth knowledge of company practices and two years of secretarial training or bachelor's degree in business administration or related Field preferred. All candidates must pass typing tests and oral interviews.

  • Shorthand (80-110 WPM) (optional)

  • Organizing office responsibilities

Employment Outlook:
Legal secretaries will be most in demand but excellent opportunities will exist for general and executive secretaries and administrative assistants with good computer and word processing skills. Openings will increase for part-time and temporary workers, especially in big cities, in business and health care.
