Why City College:
  • Our Child Development Center is a comprehensive, hands-on training lab for students, offering child care M-F for children three months to five years and evenings and Saturdays for three to five- year-olds.
  • Teaching is first priority for our child development instructors, not child development research.
  • Child development classes are full or part-time, allowing students with competing priorities to participate.
  • Our student body reflects the diversity of the modem workplace, giving students experience with students, children and families from a broad range of cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic and family backgrounds.
  • Enrollment fees are lowest of any college, university or technical school in California.

The City College Child Development program prepares students for jobs in early childhood and family support programs and to teach in public and private child development centers. The program also trains students as directors and supervisors of child development centers and offers a transfer option to four-year-institutions for students who plan to become elementary school teachers or who wish to earn a bachelor's degree in Child Development. An on-site child development center provides invaluable hands-on experience for anyone interested in a career in child development.

Excellent Opportunities for Men and Woman:
A growing need for male role models in day care and public and private education offers great job opportunities for men in this field, with flexible hours, and a wide variety of programs choice. Men may work in or manage day care centers, or pursue careers as elementary school teachers and administrators.

Departmental Tips:

  • To earn top dollar in this field, students are encouraged to complete an associate degree in Child Development and to continue taking courses after getting jobs.
  • Many Child Development students work while completing their degrees and are encouraged to enroll in a practicum or child observation lab to build their experience.
  • The City College Child Development program has strong professional ties with local job networks through community coalitions, government agencies and professional associations.
