Cosmetologists provide beauty services to customers, shampooing, tinting, bleaching, cutting and styling hair, giving scalp and facial treatments and manicures and providing makeup analysis and eyebrow shaping. Shop managers must also make appointments, order supplies, pay bills, keep records and hire employees. Cosmetologists must know product safety regulations, California State Cosmetology Board policies. Material Safety Data Sheets, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, Federal Drug Administration (PDA) and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

Experience:
1600 course hours in an approved community college cosmetology program and passing written & practical state licensing exams.

Employment Outlook:
Employment for cosmetologists, hairdressers and stylists will be steady through 2005 with 33,050 employed in California and 8,000 openings expected Best opportunities will be for part-time work in areas with growing populations.
