  • Enrollment fees are lowest of any college, university or technical school in California.

The City College Cosmetology program offers instruction and practice in the fundamentals of cosmetology, including skin, hair and nail care, salon management, sales, and client and community relations. Classes include guest speakers and salon visits and cover all aspects of cosmetology, including how to run a small business, how to advance in the field and the latest industry updates. Under California law, students enrolling in cosmetology courses must be at least 16 years old.

Excellent Opportunities for Men and Woman:
No longer exclusively for women, profitable careers for men in cosmetology include jobs as salon managers and owners, product salespeople and manufacturers' representatives as well as hair stylists.

Departmental Tips:

  • Full-time day students can complete the program in one year. Part-time, evening students can complete in 18 months.
  • All cosmetology courses involve lecture plus intensive lab practice.
  • Cosmetology students serve clients Wednesday through Friday at the Cosmetology School.
  • To comply with safety requirements, students must wear black, closed-toe, rubber-soled shoes to class.
  • Students are expected to purchase a cosmetology practice kit from the bookstore.
