Machinists craft precision parts from various materials using machine tools, following specific dimensions given on blueprints, sketches or specifications. They make or repair precision pieces, tools, and machines, operate basic metalworking power tools, and program, set up and operate Numerical Control (NC) and Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machines. Machine Tool Operators specialize on one or several machine tools and set up machine operations according to blueprints and other instructions.

Experience:
Two years of community college or trade school training; a four-year apprenticeship; or on the job training.

Skills - Knowledge of:

  • Various materials: woods, plastic, alloys
  • How to read blueprints & do setups
  • How to follow specifications
  • Machine tools & measuring devices
  • Basic machine shop practices
  • Computers & CAD/CAM software

Employment Outlook:
Demand for skilled machinists in California is tied to production of machinery, defense contracts, and a need for maintenance shops in manufacturing plants. Some 46,600 machinists should be employed in the state in the next decade with 14,350 openings projected. Apprenticeships will remain very competitive.
