Why City College:
  • City College offers extensive photographic laboratory and studio facilities and a digital computer lab equipped with the latest computers and software.
  • City College Photography courses range from basic to advanced to meet the need of both amateurs and professionals.
  • Specialized courses teach the latest photographic technology such as digital imaging, considered the industry standard.
  • City College photography students regularly win local, national and international awards and contests.
  • The Photography program is highly regarded by professional photographers for providing excellent training to students. Many San Diego professionals were trained at City College.
  • Enrollment fees are lowest of any college, university or technical school in California.

The City College Photography program offers a wide range of courses from beginning to advanced levels in photographic theory, techniques and skills. Both certificate and associate degree programs are available. Certificate courses include Basic Black & White Photography, Color Transparency, Lighting, Digital Imaging, Large Format and Business for Photography. Higher level courses train students in specialties such as portraits, fashion, fine art and commercial photography.

Excellent Opportunities for Men and Woman: Both women and men have a long history of success in the photographic industry and great opportunities exist for talented photographers of both sexes.

Departmental Tips:

  • To complete assignments, students must have a 35mm camera with adjustable focus and controls. The department does not supply these cameras.
  • Students should be ready to spend extra time both inside and outside of class to complete their assignments, and to spend whatever is needed for photographic supplies like film.
  • New digital technology requires that photographic training include both traditional silver methods and digital imaging techniques.
  • WEB page and Internet use is increasing in advertising and communications, creating great job opportunities for photographers familiar with the new technology
