Radio and Television broadcasters inform and entertain audiences over the airwaves by reading news, weather reports, commercials, sports and public service announcements and performing on-air. Multimedia offers cutting edge technology and job opportunities.

Experience:
Training at a community college, preferably with radio station for control room experience and voice skills as voice tapes are used to audition for jobs. Broadcasters must be licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. City College has the only full-licensed on- air radio station in San Diego County.

Skills - Knowledge of:

  • English language; timing & phrasing
  • Clear pronunciation; fine vocabulary
  • Microphone techniques
  • Music/subject of radio or TV format
  • Studio equipment, research & typing
  • Writing, reading & interpreting material

Employment Outlook:
Many job openings for radio and television broadcasters will be in California, with stiff competition for network spots and broadcast operations jobs. Smaller markets will offer best entry level opportunities. Some 4,040 radio and TV announcers and 6,360 broadcast operators will be employed through 2006 with 1,590 announcer and 1,990 technician openings expected.
