Technical Illustrators draw and layout graphs, charts, and figures for reference and textbooks, technical manuals, handbooks and brochures. They draw mechanical, structural and electrical parts and assemblies using the tools and techniques of both drafters and graphic designers. Illustrations are used in charts, posters, transparencies and slides

Experience:
Two to four years of training in technical illustration at a community college and on the job are recommended. Employers expect applicants to demonstrate their ability.

Employment Outlook:
Some 55,860 drafters, including technical illustrators are expected to be employed in California through 2006, with strong growth expected. Aerospace and electronics centers like Los Angeles and San Francisco will have most job openings. Technical illustrators with experience and a good reputation will be most in demand.
