Study Abroad

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." ~Mark Twain

"The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." ~St. Augustine

"I met a lot of people in Europe. I even encountered myself." ~James Baldwin

Study abroad programs have been offered every fall and spring semester for a period of 8 to 12 weeks and during the summer for 4 weeks. Programs have taken place in countries such as Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, France, Italy, Spain (Barcelona, Madrid and Salamanca), United Kingdom (Oxford and London) coordinated by City College, in conjunction with one of two California study abroad consortia, and/or in partnership with other California community colleges. Short-term study abroad programs coordinated by City College have also been offered in such locations as Madrid, Spain; Cuernavaca, Mexico (four weeks and two weeks), Ensenada, Mexico (one week), and Costa Rica (four weeks). Students on these programs participate in enhanced educational experiences by studying in different countries around the world in order to develop global competencies and to increase cultural awareness while making progress towards completion of academic goals. Classes are taught by California community college instructors and/or by host country nationals at affiliated institutions abroad. Field trips, excursions, and visits to sites of cultural and historical interest are components of the program. Housing arrangements include family homestays, student apartments, and/or residence halls. Due to the state budget cuts, for the time being at least, students are being referred to other colleges' programs. Click on the "upcoming programs" tab to learn what study abroad opportunities are being promoted.

$$$ Scholarship Opportunities $$$

A special scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs called the BENJAMIN A. GILMAN SCHOLARSHIP is available on a nationwide competitive basis to students who are in good academic standing, are U.S. citizens, and are receiving a Federal Pell Grant. This prestigious and substantial scholarship, in the amount of $1,000 - $5,000 is designed to assist students who would not normally be able to study abroad to do so. Community college students have a fairly high chance of being awarded this scholarship because they are underrepresented nationwide on study abroad programs as are students of color, men, and STEM majors. For more information, please go to www.iie.org/gilman. Deadlines are in early October for spring study abroad and in early March for summer, fall, and academic year study abroad. This scholarship is available to students who want to study on any program in any country (except for those under a U.S. State Department Travel  Warning and Cuba) - not just for City College-sponsored programs. An additional $3,000 is available for students who intend to study a "critical need" language as defined by the U.S. State Department. Such languages include Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, and Bahasa Indonesian among others.

Scholarships are also available through the Student Affairs Office in D-106 or go to www.sdcity.edu/scholarshipsStudents are encouraged to research the availability of others.

The International Education Office disseminates information about opportunities abroad (study, work, internships, volunteering, scholarships) to faculty, staff, and students.
