AGRI 102: Sustainable Urban Agriculture Practices

MW 9:35-12:45

This hands-on, experiential course links theory to hands-on application at the on-campus farm, Seeds@City.  Topics range from soil preparation, seed starting to harvesting and pest management.


AGRI 114: Plant Propagation

T: 3:15-5:20 (Lecture) Th:2:20-5:30 (Lab)

Learn about plant propagation and greenhouse management through hands-on experience. Labs will take place in Sustainable Agriculture Program's new rooftop greenhouse and urban farm greenhouse at Seed@City.


AGRI 125: Introduction to Soil Science

T:9:35-11:40 (Lecture) Th: 9:35-12:45 (Lab)

This course demonstrates the vital connection between soil and the food chain that supports life on this planet. Students participate in soil improvement and assessment activities in interactive labs at Seeds@City farm and in the agriculture laboratory.


AGRI 128: Food Preservation

5-week, hands-on course Saturday 9-12:20 

Learn food preservation techniques by practicing them! Can, dehydrate and ferment produce in City College's new teaching kitchen.



The Sustainable Agriculture program is housed within the Life Sciences Department at City College and offers a hands-on approach to becoming a professional and/or academic in the fields of sustainable agriculture, market farming and agricultural plant science.

We offer an Associate's degree for those planning to continue education in agriculture at a university as well as three certificates of performance and achievement for those interested in developing a background in agriculture, working in the industry, or starting their own business.


The goals of the program are to: 

  1. Help our society improve the health of its environment, food, and communities;
  2. Give students practical experience working alongside professional farmers & agriculture faculty;
  1. Teach students how to critically analyze historical and current food systems to offer more sustainable solutions.

The average age of US farmers is 59 years old. Over 50% of the world's population currently lives in cities. 15% of the world's food is currently currently grown in cities. According to UN projections, 2/3 of the world's population will be living in cities by 2030. We need more farmers to meet the growing need for food and to ensure local food security.The USDA projects that "the agricultural, food, and renewable natural resources sectors of the U.S. economy will generate an estimated 54,400 annual openings in food, renewable energy, and environmental specialties between 2010 and 2015." And, relevant to our program, among the priority occupations are:
