Coach Krishna Curry: Shining a Light on the Essence of Black History
Krishna Curry, a former NCAA All-American and Olympic trials qualifier, now leads the women’s cross-country team at San Diego City College with a mission far greater than medals. Her passion lies in using sports to teach resilience, discipline, and life-long healthy habits, while also championing equity and social justice. As the first African American head cross-country coach at City, Curry sees her role as part of a larger movement to uplift underrepresented communities. Inspired by civil rights icons and Black excellence throughout her journey from Nashville to UCLA, she now helps students access crucial campus resources and navigate challenges she once faced herself. Curry’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of representation, mentorship, and the transformative power of community college.
Tyra Lawley: Leading the Way for Practical Change while Amplifying Fellow Student Voices at City
Senate President Tyra Lawley, of the Associated Student Government (ASG) at San Diego City College, is driving positive change on campus, focusing on issues like student homelessness, accessibility, and underrepresented voices. Once struggling as a high school student, Lawley’s journey to leadership has been shaped by perseverance, patience, and a commitment to creating a supportive environment for all students. Her experience navigating conflict and resolution within ASG has enhanced her ability to lead and advocate effectively.
Caleb Bryant: A Commitment to Keeping the Doors Open for Others
Told he would face immense challenges, Caleb Bryant defied the odds through perseverance and his mother’s unwavering support. Now an academic standout at San Diego City College, he excels in psychology, mentors students, and prepares to transfer to San Diego State University. His journey, celebrated at City College’s Black Employee Luncheon, is a testament to resilience, proving that determination and opportunity can fuel success.
Dr. Erin Charlens: Approaching Her Work Through an Equity Lens
Dr. Erin Charlens, longtime counselor and former Umoja Program Coordinator at San Diego City College, has spent nearly two decades empowering Black students through mentorship, equity-driven counseling, and community-building. Honored as a finalist for the 2025 Black Educator Excellence Awards, Charlens credits her students for shaping who she is, describing her work as “the privilege of a lifetime.” A first-generation college student herself, she draws from personal experience and a deep commitment to social justice to lead transformative programs like Umoja and the Transfer Center. Her legacy at City is defined by compassion, connection, and an unwavering belief in her students’ brilliance and leadership.
