Nick Slinglend: Academic Senate President-elect Committed to Student Success
Math Professor Nick Slinglend has spent nearly 20 years at San Diego City College using culturally responsive teaching and innovative technology to make STEM education more accessible. Now, as President-elect of the Academic Senate, he’s preparing to lead the campus through a time of national uncertainty while staying committed to equity, inclusion, and student success. Known for his thoughtful leadership and student-centered approach, Slinglend has helped shape key academic policies and continues to advocate for balanced math placement strategies. As he prepares to take on this new role, he remains focused on keeping City College a safe and welcoming space for all.
Salvador Guzman-Arellano: Paying it Forward at City
Salvador Guzman-Arellano, an accounting specialist supervisor in Business Services at San Diego City College, is a shining example of determination and upward mobility. A first-generation college graduate and proud City College alum, he’s now pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Cal State San Marcos with aspirations of becoming City’s Vice President of Administrative Services. Recognized at the Employee Alumni Awards, Guzman-Arellano credits City’s supportive community for inspiring his journey—from part-time student and shoe store sales leader to full-time staff member and supervisor. He and his wife, Bianca, a Ph.D. candidate, are deeply rooted in the college—so much so that they even got married on campus. His story is a powerful reflection of City College’s “You Belong” spirit in action.
Breaking the Mold: John Dalton’s Grit-Fueled Journey to Creative Freedom
John Dalton, former member of the San Diego-based hip hop group The KneeHighs, has transitioned from performing in front of crowds to creating his own music and fostering a community of aspiring musicians. With a vision to create a space where students can thrive independently of major labels, Dalton combines his creative ambition with a strong desire to build a supportive environment for the next generation of musicians.
Kim Habeck: A Commitment to City
Kim Habeck does far more than her title of equipment manager suggests—she’s the heart of San Diego City College athletics. From setting up games to washing uniforms, her work keeps the department running behind the scenes every single day. A former student-athlete herself, Habeck has dedicated decades to City College, calling it her second home. Her unwavering commitment was recently honored at the Employee Alumni Awards, celebrating a career built on passion, purpose, and pride.
