City College’s Cosmetology program provides entry level skills to students interested in a career in the cosmetology, esthetician, and manicuring industries. Orientations are available every Friday from 9:00am to 11:00am.

The full-time program takes place Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm on campus for hands-on lab learning and online for lectures. Students can purchase their books and a cosmetology kit from the campus bookstore. Training stylists are encouraged to wear black scrubs and a black salon smock. Eligible students may receive support with learning materials through financial aid.

Inside the classroom, students prepare for California's State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam. Graduates earn employment across top salons in San Diego or work for major brands such as MAC Cosmetics and Joico Laboratories, Inc.

“City College is a great place to start for students who want to professionally experience the beauty industry for the first time,” said Sudie Phillips, M. Ed., department chair, who has been teaching cosmetology at City College for 31 years. “The industry knowledge and practice a student can gain at a community college is incomparable, due to its affordable nature and focus on both beauty and education.”
