Bigg Dame, a seasoned song composer and music student at San Diego City College, is making waves in the local music scene. Recently celebrated for his latest release, he attributes much of his musical journey to the influences around him and the professional training he's receiving.
"Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember," Bigg Dame said. "It’s about connecting with your environment and expressing what you feel."
Starting as a proactive music student in Detroit, the home of one of his biggest influences, Eminem, Bigg Dame's passion for music was ignited through his family, allowing him to enter professional studios early on. "I will start somewhere," he mentioned when discussing how he got into the process of creating music. "The power does not come from notation; it comes from appreciation."
Even while serving in the military, Bigg Dame continued to nurture his musical talents. He connected with fellow singers through a Navy veteran Facebook group, which helped him stay engaged with his craft. He was connected with a female Marine who was featured in one of his songs.
Bigg Dame draws inspiration from various genres and cultures, noting that urban styles are gaining traction globally. He remarked on the influence of sounds in his work: “...the 80s hitting really hard right now for urban style.” This openness to diverse musical influences shapes his creative process.
At San Diego City College, Bigg Dame has honed skills critical for a successful career in music production. “I've learned how to marry my verses with rhythm,” he explained when asked about valuable lessons gained from his courses.
He shared that creativity often strikes unexpectedly, stating, “Sometimes I just have that beat following me all the way to sleep.” This relentless drive fuels not only his songwriting but also shapes how he approaches challenges within the industry.
“Finding a singer sometimes can be tough,” Bigg Dame admitted while reflecting on obstacles faced as a student musician. However, his resilience shines through as he continues building connections within San Diego's vibrant arts community.
As he looks forward after graduation, Bigg Dame expressed ambitions beyond traditional performance. “I want to expand my reach within the industry,” he stated confidently while contemplating future opportunities in music education or mentorship roles for aspiring musicians.
With projects aimed at showcasing individual artistry and collaboration ahead—both online and live—Bigg Dame is well-positioned to make an indelible mark on listeners far beyond California's borders.
“I want people to connect with what I create,” said Bigg Dame regarding future releases slated later this year. He remains optimistic about balancing academics alongside an evolving career path filled with innovative collaborations set against ever-changing cultural backdrops.
Looking ahead, Bigg Dame is determined to give back to the community that nurtured his talents. "Once I make it big, I want to return to San Diego City College and support the next generation of musicians," he stated with conviction. His commitment to fostering new talent ensures that his legacy will inspire and uplift future artists for years to come.
