Breanna Hess, aka Boo Finds Her Voice and Community at City

December 12, 2024

Breanna Hess, artistically known as "Boo," has embarked on an inspiring musical journey at San Diego City College. A 27-year-old student from Nevada, Boo is elevating her music career while embracing the college’s vibrant community.

“I moved to San Diego about three years ago,”- Boo highlighted. “I’ve always been really passionate about music from my father being a musician... moving to San Diego really kind of lit the fire underneath me to jumpstart myself into a career.”

Since joining the college's music program under the guidance of Professor Espar, she has not only honed her skills but also cultivated new relationships that have expanded her horizons within the music industry. “He has been super inspiring... working in promoting and marketing myself... has been really inspiring,” she shared.

Boo's dedication resulted in exciting opportunities; she is currently working with Insomniac Events—a local promotional company—and recently performed with a local band at shows around town. “I’m now working with Insomniac which is a local company in San Diego promoting," she noted excitedly.

The culmination of her hard work is reflected in a compilation album featuring original songs by students from City College. “We’re doing this compilation album too,” Boo explained. “It’s surreal to see this kind of play out; I would have never expected this even a year ago.”

The compilation includes diverse sounds that exemplify Boo's eclectic musical style—an experimental blend influenced by various genres including R&B and EDM rhythms intertwined with Brazilian beats. "Genres can be constraining," Boo remarked passionately. “I think that genres kind of make us mesh into a box where we're not able to flourish.”

She credits much of her creative inspiration to fellow musician Gui Ferraz—“a Brazilian artist” who further ignited her passion for collaboration and positivity through music.

Reflecting on how far she's come since arriving at San Diego City College, Boo acknowledged the importance of community colleges: “There’s so many different age groups... it’s beautiful to see all of us come together.”

As for advice for new students considering joining the program- She emphasizes self-discovery: "Give grace to yourself... take your time learning what you want to do."

Boo’s personal journey highlights an essential truth: it’s never too late—or too early—to pursue one's passion authentically.

For those eager for more from this emerging artist, stay tuned as Boo prepares for upcoming performances and releases, including tracks from the highly anticipated student compilation album set for release on Spotify and other streaming platforms.

Boo is not just making music; she's building community—and that's what truly matters in any artistic endeavor.
