San Diego City College is proud to highlight Megann/Bob, a student whose journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and advocacy. Despite facing numerous challenges, including being unhoused, systemic barriers, and inadequate support for learning disabilities, Megann/Bob have found innovative ways to continue their pursuit of education.
Originally from Detroit, Megann/Bob's educational journey has been marked by resilience and adaptability. After facing significant challenges throughout 19 years of education, particularly during their time at Academy of Art University, and City College of San Francisco where “students were not provided with a caring campus,” Megann/Bob has pursued various fields of study, including automotive, rugby coach certifications, and a Pastry Chef degree from California Culinary Academy, Le Cordon Bleu San Francisco. Their determination to overcome obstacles led to seeking better accommodations and support, despite encountering numerous setbacks.
"I go by Megann/Bob and am originally from Detroit. I am a homeless student and sustainable artist in San Diego, CA. Life has been a very interesting road to navigate, with learning disabilities making it a questionable experience among humans," Megann/Bob shared.
For 19 years, Megann/Bob tried but was never able to take lecture classes due to the lack of accommodations. "What halted me from ever taking another lecture class again was being told by my City College of San Francisco DSPS Counselor, 'If you are getting so distracted in class, Megann, you should get something like horse blinders to block your peripheral view.' That, at the time, ended my dreams of being the first to graduate in my family ever," Megann/Bob said.
Megann/Bob have encountered a lot of problems; their parents were not equipped to provide a variety of basic needs. They were also not equipped as parents to handle with emotional intelligence a child on the spectrum, and with auditory processing disorder. Megann/Bob has surpassed being misdiagnosed with ADHD. They have come to understand their auditory processing disorder. Being a person who is often misunderstood by society but is extremely bright and as a result has accumulated a multitude of degrees.
Fast forward to San Diego City College, Megann/Bob continues to inspire others with their unwavering determination and self-reliance. This student’s story serves as a powerful reminder that with resilience and independence, one can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
Megann/Bob's experiences highlight the need for systemic change in educational institutions. From being told they needed "fresh" diagnoses to encountering inadequate testing methods, Megann/Bob’s journey underscores the importance of proper support for students with learning disabilities. Despite these challenges, their advocacy has made a significant impact, raising awareness about the need for better accommodations and support.
Megann/Bob’s presence at San Diego City College is not just about personal achievement, but also about advocating for better support systems for others facing similar struggles. Despite facing homelessness, a challenging divorce, and often juggling multiple jobs, Megann/Bob is determined to support others in overcoming these challenges.
This Spring 2025 is Megann/Bob’s last semester at City. "I LOVE ART! With my slow turtle pace of only 2 lecture classes a semester, in Spring 2025, I WILL be graduating with 5 associate degrees and 7 certificates ranging from Art, Film/Video, and Sustainability," Megann/Bob said proudly.
Above all, Megann/Bob received early re-acceptance to their school of choice, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, for Fall 2025. "I have no money! I live paycheck to paycheck! But I really need to do this for my mental health," Megann/Bob emphasized.
During this time of soul searching, Megann/Bob has identified with the craft of puppetry and storytelling via PSAs (short films). Being a unique individual who has cultivated an equally unique craft, it only fits to be in a community and environment where it could serve best. University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii represents a unique opportunity where their sustainable art will be embraced and celebrated by the powerful community. Megann/Bob creates Eco/Sustainable PSAs, short films, and documentaries with the Mobits "puppets" and kids. "For if kids can understand and explain, then adults have no excuse," Megann/Bob highlighted, quoting the Mobits.
To make Megann/Bob’s dream a reality, they need help with shipping the van you see in the article’s picture, personal items, car maintenance, housing, meal plans, and more. "I WILL NOT be homeless!" Megann/Bob declared while manifesting.
Megann/Bob is seeking support through donations, following Mobits on Instagram (@MobitBob
