Illuminating the Path for Aspiring Artist

March 20, 2024

Wayne Hulgin stands as a beacon of creativity and mentorship, illuminating the path for aspiring artists at San Diego City College for 28 years. With an educational background in graphic design, drawing, and a Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing, Hulgin brings a wealth of knowledge and profound commitment towards his role as a fine arts professor.

At a young age, Hulgin’s passion for art was apparent. His journey into the art field was a natural progression, ignited by a deep-rooted love for craft and a desire to see his creations evolve.

“I was born with it,” he said. “I was always drawing, always doing something creative.”

For Hulgin, the most rewarding aspect of teaching at City College is witnessing his students’ growth. “The students and watching them grow,” he said. By embracing an open-door policy, Hulgin cultivates a sense of community where everyone is welcome and is encouraged to return even after they’ve moved on to other endeavors.

When asked about his desired outcomes for students, Hulgin states, “confidence in their art, and their life,” as well as “never give up, always aim high, and support each other.” Teaching his students the belief that with confidence, determination and camaraderie, the possibilities are limitless.

Samantha YoxanSamantha Yoxan Mesina Velarde, a first-generation college student from Tijuana who is determined to transfer to SDSU for graphic design, echoes the sentiment of Hulgin’s impact.

Discovering self-expression in Hulgin’s freehand drawing class, Velarde highlights the nurturing environment created by the professor. “He feels more like a friend than a professor,” she said.

Velarde credits Hulgin with not only enhancing her drawing skills but also opening a critical eye in her, allowing her to identify crucial details in her illustrations. “He spends time with each person,” she notes, illustrating Hulgin’s dedication towards his students’ growth.

As Hulgin continues to inspire and empower the next generation of artists. His legacy at San Diego City College remains one of the most dedicated and empowering professors. Under his guidance, students like Velarde gain skills, confidence, and support to excel in their craft and in their personal lives.
