From Navy Service to Literary Success: Kendall McLemore's Inspiring Journey

November 21, 2024

Kendall McLemore, a dedicated Navy veteran and accomplished author, recently shared insights into his remarkable journey from Navy military serviceman to becoming a published author. McLemore opened up about his experiences, motivations, and the impact of his service on his current career.

McLemore, who joined the Navy at the age of 18, grew up in St. Louis with a desire to explore the world. "I wanted to see the world and being in the military was the best option," McLemore said. His time in the Navy was marked by memorable experiences and valuable lessons. "One of the most significant experiences was learning how to handle challenging situations, like facing a fire for the first time," McLemore recalled.

The military not only provided McLemore with a global perspective but also instilled a strong sense of self-reliance and determination. "The military prepares you to guide yourself in the right direction, but you have to learn to do things on your own," McLemore explained. This mindset helped McLemore achieve the rank of Petty Officer, a testament to his dedication and hard work.

After completing his service, McLemore pursued higher education at San Diego City College, where he continues to be involved with the military community. "I'm still on the list for another two years, and I also had the idea to teach as a professor of English, eventually," McLemore shared. His transition to civilian life was made smoother by the support of the San Diego City College Veterans Center. "Joining the veterans' community at this college made me feel welcomed and understood," McLemore said.

McLemore’s passion for writing began in kindergarten and evolved over the years. "I started with a picture book and continued writing through school," McLemore recounted. His dedication to storytelling led to the publication of several works, including "The Boneyard," written under his initials (KIM).

McLemore’s writing is deeply influenced by his faith. "My message in my books is always about being with God and living it," McLemore emphasized. He hopes his readers take away a sense of hope and inspiration from his stories.

Looking ahead, McLemore has ambitious goals for his writing career. "My other goal is to finish my next book by the end of the spring semester (2025) and publish it within a year," McLemore shared. He plans to continue writing independently, focusing on the satisfaction of completing their work rather than commercial success.

McLemore’s military experience has significantly influenced his writing style. "Sometimes my stories, especially the first drafts, are very blunt and straightforward, reflecting my military background," McLemore explained. However, he also embraces the freedom to revise and refine his work, adding depth and nuance.

For young people considering a military career, McLemore offers thoughtful advice. "The military is a great option, but you need to do your research and talk to people. It's a good way to start your life and gain valuable experiences," McLemore said. He emphasized the importance of understanding what you're getting into and being prepared for the challenges ahead.

McLemore also addresses common misconceptions about veterans. "Not everyone in the military is the same. We all bring different skills and backgrounds, and it's important to see beyond the stereotypes," McLemore noted.

McLemore’s journey from military service to authorship is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of service on personal growth and career success. His story will certainly continue to inspire and motivate others, both within and outside the military community.
