Pamela Morales-Perez's story is one of courage and ambition. Raised in Maryland, she initially aspired to be a mechanic, but a desire for new experiences drove her to enlist in the Marine Corps. "I felt stagnant where I was living at," she stated. "I just wanted to explore new relationships and experiences." Enrolling in the Marines not only provided her with the opportunity to push her limits, primarily on their well-known extraneous boot camp, rated as one of the most challenging of all basic trainings. Morales-Perez’s decision to join also connected her with a tradition and camaraderie that resonated with her values.
Following her service, Morales-Perez faced challenges transitioning back to civilian life, a struggle she admits is common among veterans. "The process of transitioning into the civilian sector was a struggle, mentally," she explained. "If it were up to me, I would have immediately gone into school, but I had to figure out whether I wanted to return to Maryland or continue building my roots here in California." Ultimately, she chose San Diego City College, drawn by our college’s reputable graphic design program and its supportive community, as recommended by fellow San Diego Marines.
As a first-generation college student, Morales-Perez is determined to honor her parents' sacrifices by excelling in her academics. "I always wanted to be the first in my family to have a degree," she reflected. "I wanted to show my parents that their struggles didn’t go in vain." Her commitment to her education is unwavering, and she loves that at City’s Veterans Service Center (VSC) she has been able to share her experiences with other veterans. "Take advantage of all the resources that schools have to offer," she advises. "In times of doubt, always reach out. There are people who care and a support system available."
Morales-Perez’s journey is not just about personal achievement; it is also about paving the way for future generations of women veterans. "Knowing that I can hopefully inspire other women not to hold back… keeps me motivated," she said. With her sights set on a career in the motorcycle community, Morales-Perez is ready to weave her love of graphic design into her passion for motorcycles. "If I had the chance to work for a magazine, it would be something I truly believe in, and I would want to continue publishing."
Pamela Morales-Perez's journey is an inspiring reminder that courage, support, and ambition can pave the way towards one’s goals. Ultimately leading one to extraordinary achievements, both for oneself and for others.
