San Diego City College to Offer 4-Year Degree in Cyber Defense and Analysis

San Diego City College has secured approval to offer the first bachelor’s degree in the college’s 108-year history. Students at the downtown San Diego campus will soon be able to earn a four-year degree in the burgeoning field of cyber security.

On November 14, San Diego City College traveled to Sacramento to present on our efforts to launch a bachelor’s degree in Cyber Defense and Analysis to the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges. We were joined by two fellow community colleges who also presented their respective programs. This matter will then go before the Board of Governors in January 2023 for their consideration. Our presentation shows how the expansion of 30 additional baccalaureate degrees in California community colleges will help offer key workforce training for growing industry sectors that are not currently offered by the University of California (UC) or California State University (CSU) systems.

Jacqueline C. Willett: Supporting City College Veterans

San Diego City College welcomed Jacqueline C. Willett as the newest veterans counselor in September 2022. Willet is a first-generation college student and comes from a long line of military service members. Willet earned her master’s degree in Veterans Counseling twelve years ago. “At that time there were not many college services dedicated to student veterans, but I believed someday I would find a need to fill, and City College was the perfect fit,” she said.

Long time college counselor, Crystal Rodriguez, has been named the first full-time San Diego Promise and East Village Middle College High School (EVMCHS) counselor at San Diego City College. Rodriguez began her new role on October 10, 2022.

Knights Win Grossmont Tourney Title; Howell, Bradley Jr. Make All-Tourney

For the second year in a row and for the fifth time in the last six seasons, the 9th-ranked Knights have claimed the Grossmont College tournament championship after getting past No. 10 Yuba, 73-70, in the title game on Sunday night. Sophomore Anthony Howell was named Most Outstanding Player and Kevin Bradley Jr. was selected to the all-tournament team.

The Messy Road to Bring a Bachelor’s Degree to San Diego City College

During a February meeting of the college council of San Diego City College, cybersecurity professor David Kennemer laid out his proposal to develop a bachelor’s degree in cyber defense and analysis. Up until recently, community colleges could only offer associate’s degrees and workforce certifications. But thanks to 2021’s AB 927, up to 30 community colleges annually can now develop bachelor’s degrees that meet certain stipulations. It would be the first bachelor’s degree offered by City College in its over 100-year history, and only the second offered by a community college in the county.

San Diego City College Receives $2M Grant to Support Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Students

San Diego City College has been awarded a $2 million Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant, which will provide $400,000 a year over the next five years, will fund the Including City Achievement Network or ICAN program and enable the college to improve and expand its capacity to serve Asian American, Native American Pacific Islander students, and low-income individuals.
