Knights Win Grossmont Tourney Title; Howell, Bradley Jr. Make All-Tourney
For the second year in a row and for the fifth time in the last six seasons, the 9th-ranked Knights have claimed the Grossmont College tournament championship after getting past No. 10 Yuba, 73-70, in the title game on Sunday night. Sophomore Anthony Howell was named Most Outstanding Player and Kevin Bradley Jr. was selected to the all-tournament team.
The Messy Road to Bring a Bachelor’s Degree to San Diego City College
During a February meeting of the college council of San Diego City College, cybersecurity professor David Kennemer laid out his proposal to develop a bachelor’s degree in cyber defense and analysis. Up until recently, community colleges could only offer associate’s degrees and workforce certifications. But thanks to 2021’s AB 927, up to 30 community colleges annually can now develop bachelor’s degrees that meet certain stipulations. It would be the first bachelor’s degree offered by City College in its over 100-year history, and only the second offered by a community college in the county.
San Diego City College Receives $2M Grant to Support Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Students
San Diego City College has been awarded a $2 million Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant, which will provide $400,000 a year over the next five years, will fund the Including City Achievement Network or ICAN program and enable the college to improve and expand its capacity to serve Asian American, Native American Pacific Islander students, and low-income individuals.
City College Welcomes Dr. Bettencourt as the New Faculty Assessment Coordinator
San Diego City College welcomed current adjunct faculty member, Alisha J. Bettencourt, Ph.D. in the psychology department as the new faculty assessment coordinator in May 2022. “I started my career in education as an elementary school teacher,” Bettencourt said. “Then I shifted my focus toward psychology once I realized my motivation came from learning about students and their behavior.”

San Diego City College Nursing Program Ranks No. 5 in California
San Diego City College Nursing Program ranks fifth in the state for best nursing school in California, according to RegisteredNursing.org. Nursing programs were assessed on several factors which represent how well a program supports students towards licensure and beyond. RegisterNursing.organalyzed past and present first-time National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX RN) pass rates, weighted by year.

Congratulations to Rafael Alvarez, director of the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Program at San Diego City College, for being selected as a 2022 Top 50 Latino Leaders of Influence by the San Diego Business Journal (SDBJ). Other district administrators to make the list: Chancellor Carlos O. Cortez and San Diego College of Continuing Education President Tina M. King.
