We are located in S-401 and invite you to join us in-person Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
You can learn about the Yo Soy STEM grant and use the student lounge in between classes to study or hang out.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A HISPANIC-SERVING INSTITUTION? (HSI)

San Diego City College is proud to be formally designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) by the United States Department of Education. The purpose of the HSI is to expand educational opportunities and improve the academic attainment of Hispanic and low-income students, and to expand and enhance the academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability of colleges and universities that are educating the majority of Hispanic college students. As an HSI, San Diego City College, is committed to student success, educational equity and social justice. |
“This competition specifically acknowledges the importance of student-centered programs that will increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students who graduate with degrees in STEM fields, as well as the need to promote support systems to ensure that community college students will continue to pursue STEM degrees once enrolled at a four-year institution.” (U.S. Department of Education, 2021)
At San Diego City College, the Yo Soy STEM grant will:

| Erick Ramirez Manriquez is a first-generation Latinx Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology at UC San Diego. As a former transfer and undocumented student, Erick's disruptive mission is grounded in working with, by, and for the needs of minoritized students. Erick graduated with honors from UC San Diego, obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology-Social Inequality, and a minor in Education Studies. Upon graduation, Erick worked as an academic counselor at San Jose City College and UC Santa Cruz for the Cultivamos Excelencia Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) grant, leading and implementing evidence-based, culturally sustaining, and student-centered transfer programs. In recognition of Erick's work, he has received numerous nominations and awards, such as the Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship (Honorable Mention-2022), Oceanids Memorial Fellowship (2021), UC San Diego Student Housing Opportunity for Recruitment Enhancement (SHORE) Award (2020), UC Santa Cruz Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Transformative Service Award (2019), the Equal Opportunity-Affirmative Action & Diversity Award (2017), and the UC President's Award for Outstanding Student Leadership (Nomination-2017). | |

Ivan Valdovinos is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He is a first-generation college student and the son of Mexican immigrants from Michoacán, Mexico. Ivan attended Washington State University where he obtained dual Bachelor degrees in English and Foreign Languages and Cultures. He also holds a Washington State Teacher Certification with an endorsement in English Language Arts. Upon completion of his undergraduate career, Ivan entered graduate school at Harvard University where he completed a Master of Education in Education Policy and Management. Professionally, Ivan has served as the Director of the TRIO Student Support Services Program at Wenatchee Valley Community College where he actively worked towards increasing retention, graduation, and transfer rates of first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities. Ivan is excited to work with San Diego City College Latina/o/x STEM students and to develop programming that will enhance their educational trajectories. |
