Music Degrees and Certificates
Redesigned Degree and New Courses for Fall 2022
The Commercial Music Program is excited to announce the redesign of our Associate of Science degree, launching in Fall 2022. The degree, an A.S. in Music Production Technology, gives students hands-on experience in the business side of the industry through MUSC 118: Music Entrepreneurship and MUSC 220A/B: Music Marketing and Promotion I/II. Five of the music production courses have been revised with improved rigor and expanded content which now makes them transfer to SDSU, saving students time and money. The re-design also expands the live performance course into a four-semester sequence, MUSC 170A-D: Electro-Acoustic Ensemble I-IV. The ensemble will perform at campus and community functions throughout the year.
Important Notes:
- The content of MUSI 204: Audio System Design and Maintenance has been incorporated into MUSC 162 and MUSC 262.
- Students who were enrolled in the Commercial Music Program in Spring 2022 or earlier may complete the requirements of the old degree or the new degree.
- Commercial Music courses that you have already taken can be substituted for many of the courses in the new degree. (Ex. If you’ve already taken MUSC 50, you wouldn’t need to take MUSC 104.)
- The Certificate of Achievement in Audio Production Technology focuses solely on music production. It has been reduced from eight courses to six: MUSC 104, 160, 162, 252, 260, 262.
Schedule Planning
Many courses are only offered one semester per year. To help you reach your academic goals at City College as efficiently as possible, please take a look at the table below to see which courses will be offered when. For questions about selecting Music and Commercial Music courses, please contact Professor Bob Kostlan (rkostlan@sdccd.edu) or Associate Professor Mike Espar (mespar@sdccd.edu).
