Program for Engaged Educational Resources
Program Description and Goals
Thanks to a partnership with the San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego City College offers the first of its kind program preparing and educating people to work in the field addressing homelessness, named PEER, Program for Engaged Educational Resources. Students who take HUMS 75 will also have access to an academic counselor, career coach for resume and job searching skills, and specialized job fairs with organizations addressing homelessness.
Best suited for those interested in the human and social services sector (example majors: Social Work, Alcohol and Other Drug Studies, Psychology, Gerontology, Mental Health Worker Certificate). Students will examine both federal and local responses to the nation’s homeless crisis, with a specific focus on the San Diego County Region. The course will provide an overview of various evidenced-based interventions, practices that are essential to working in the homeless services sector, and hear from frontline workers, those with lived experiences, and thought leaders.
Education: Human Services 75
Human Services 75 is a two unit course is an introduction to the policies, governance, and operations of the homeless services sector. Students will examine both federal and local responses to the Nation’s homeless crisis, with a specific focus to the San Diego County Region.
The course will provide an overview of various evidenced-based interventions as well as practices essential to working in the homeless services sector. Students have the opportunity to hear from practitioners in the field.
Career Coaching
Taja Marbley serves PEER as a personal development and career coach to students and alumni enrolled in the HUMS 75 class, Social Work, Human Services, Alcohol and Other Drug Studies, Psychology, and Gerontology classes interested in working in organizations serving people experiencing homelesssness.
