Mission

The mission of Instructional Services is to provide high quality instructional programs that promote student learning and success. The Office of Instruction ensures curriculum building, program planning, the timely and accurate development of the class schedule, catalog, and professional development for faculty and staff, as well as ensuring compliance with state, federal, and local regulations and policies. Instructional Services accomplishes its mission through clear and effective communication and coordination with College and District administrators, faculty and staff, and with external agencies.

Instructional Services Vision

In an effort to dismantle current systems that do not promote student success, Instructional Services leads City College to provide students a clear path to completion. 

  • Create a 2-year schedule allowing opportunities for night, weekend, online, and part-time students
  • Create cross divisional collaborative efforts among colleagues to support the idea of pathway completion

Dr. Matilda “Tillie” Chavez serves as Vice President of Instruction at San Diego City College, where she provides strategic leadership for academic programs, enrollment management, faculty development, and instructional innovation. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, she has served as Acting President, Chief Academic Officer, Dean, Department Chair, and Faculty Leader.

A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Chavez is committed to expanding educational opportunity, strengthening workforce pathways, and advancing student success. She is recognized for her collaborative leadership style, dedication to shared governance, and ability to build strong partnerships that support student achievement and institutional excellence. 

Dr. Chavez believes that strong relationships, inclusive decision-making, and a commitment to belonging are essential to creating transformative educational experiences for students and communities.
