Course Syllabi, Course Outlines of Record, and Transcript Information

Students sometimes need course information for transfer, evaluation, or personal records. It is important to know that the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) colleges — City, Mesa, and Miramar — do not send course syllabi for course review purposes.

Why SDCCD Does Not Send Course Syllabi

Course syllabi can vary from instructor to instructor and may not include all of the information found in the official course record. In California Community Colleges, the Course Outline of Record (COR) is the official legal document for a course under California Education Code Title 5.

The COR:

  • is the official course document used by California Community Colleges
  • is written and revised every six years by discipline faculty
  • is reviewed and approved by the college Curriculum Review Committee
  • is also approved by a districtwide Curriculum Committee in the SDCCD
  • includes the official course objectives, topics, and curriculum information

Each instructor is required to teach the course according to the approved course objectives and topics listed in the COR. Instructors may choose to emphasize some topics differently, but the COR reflects the approved curriculum for the course.

Because of this, the COR is often more useful than a syllabus when students need official course information.

Transcript Information

Students can visit SDCCD Transcripts for information about requesting official or unofficial transcripts.

An official or unofficial SDCCD transcript may include:

  • course numbers
  • course titles
  • the semester and year the student successfully completed the course
  • courses completed with a grade of C or better
  • courses completed with a grade of P

Requests will be answered by the campus Articulation Officer and/or Curriculum Analyst.

Tips for Students

If you need course information for transfer review or evaluation:

  • request your transcript early
  • review both historical and active Course Outline of Record (COR) if the course was taken in a previous term
  • use the COR instead of a syllabus when official course content is needed
  • complete the COR request form if you need help locating the COR

ASSIST is an online tool that helps students explore transfer information across California colleges and universities. Students can use ASSIST to review:

  • articulation agreements with CSU, UC, and independent universities by campus
  • courses approved for transferability

AB 1111, Common Course Numbering (CCN) is a statewide effort to make course numbers more consistent across California community colleges.

California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC)

AB 928, the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act of 2021, supports changes to transfer pathways and General Education patterns in California. Cal-GETC stands for the California General Education Transfer Curriculum. It is a General Education pathway that supports transfer planning.

Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) are designed to help students complete a community college degree and prepare to transfer into the CSU system. Automatic student placement in ADTs may support more efficient degree planning.

English and Math Placement

The law prohibits California Community Colleges from requiring remedial English and Math courses, instead requiring that they place students directly into transfer-level English and Math courses.
