Credit for Prior Learning
At San Diego City College, we recognize that learning happens in many ways. Our Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program allows you to earn college credit for knowledge and skills you gained through prior experience outside of the college classroom.
For example, you can apply for credit for knowledge you have gained through military training, work experience, volunteer service, or professional certifications. This program helps you accelerate your academic journey and reduce both time and cost by awarding college credit through several methods of assessment, including:
- Credit by Exam – Demonstrate your knowledge through faculty-approved examinations.
- Portfolio Assessment – Submit documented evidence of prior learning for faculty review.
- Professional Certifications – Receive credit for industry-recognized certifications.
- Military Transcripts – Apply credit for formal military education and training.
Credit is applied directly to eligible courses and can help you complete your degree or certificate more quickly. We look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals!
Credit for Prior Learning Process
Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is college credit awarded for validated college-level skills and knowledge gained outside of a college classroom (Administrative Procedure AP-5235). Credit may be earned for eligible courses approved by faculty when students satisfactorily pass an authorized assessment.
