Outside Scholarships

There are many scholarships offered each year by private organizations, businesses, and educational institutions. Each scholarship has different requirements and application procedures. To find out more, you can visit the individual websites listed below.

Scholarships for 2024-2025

Colibri MX Scholarship

Amount: $1000
Opens: May 1st, 2025
Eligibility:

  • Be a first-time college student (No prior enrollment in college)
  • Be enrolled for Fall 2024 semester, minimum 6 credit hours (Must provide proof of enrollment before award is granted)
  • Have a 2.5 cumulative high school GPA or above
  • Be an immigrant of Mexican or Latinx descent or the child of immigrant parents of Mexican or Latinx descent (Must submit a copy of the birth certificate or personal identification)
  • Demonstrate financial needReside within the County of San Diego

Supplementary Application Information 

  • Submit proof of residence in San Diego County (e.g. copy of a utility bill in applicant or parent’s name)
  • Submit a copy of your birth certificate or personal identification to demonstrate Mexican or Latinx heritage.
  • Submit your academic transcript that includes your GPA.
  • Submit a copy of your college acceptance letter.
  • Write and submit a 600 word essay that answers one of the following questions:
    • What have you done to make your school or your community a better place?
    • Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge.
    • How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
Name: Future of Finance Scholarship Award


Category: Recipient will be chosen based on their written essay
Amount: $2000

Eligibility: Full-time or part-time college/university students with a minimum GPA of at least 2.0

Name: Last Mile Education Fund Scholarships

Name: Giva Annual Student Scholarship

Name: AFT Larry Schwartz Memorial Scholarship 2025

Eligibility:

Be currently enrolled in at least 6 units at City, Mesa, Miramar, Grossmont or Cuyamaca in the Spring 2025 semester
Have completed a minimum of 12 units at City, Mesa, Miramar, Grossmont or Cuyamaca or have attended at least 100 hours at San Diego College of Continuing Education.
Be a labor union member in good standing currently OR have a family member currently in a union
Write an essay (see prompt below)

Scholarships for 2025-2026

Name: The 2025-2026 Common Scholarship Application (CSA)

Category: The CSA is a fantastic opportunity for high school seniors, undergraduates, graduate students and adult re-entry candidates to apply for more than 130 scholarships with one simple application.

Deadline: Opens on January 15, 2025. The application deadline is March 5, 2025 at 2 p.m.

Name: National Rainbow College Fund

Category: We are thrilled to introduce the National Rainbow College Fund (NRCF), a new scholarship program that empowers LGBTQ+ students across the state of California to pursue their ambitions for higher education - regardless of the public nature of their sexual identity.

Deadline: January 15, 2025 - March 5, 2025

Name: Kyoto Prize Scholarship 

Category: For high school students eager to apply early, the Kyoto Prize Scholarship is now open! This prestigious merit-based award recognizes outstanding students in the fields of Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts & Philosophy.

Deadline: The application is open now and will close on January 7, 2025

California Retired Teachers Assn. Scholarship Foundation Board Scholarship

Category: California Retired Teachers Scholarship Foundation Inc. is offering scholarships of $3000.00 each to two-year college students with sufficient units to be classified as Upper Division status and are transferring to a four-year university to complete coursework to obtain a California Teaching Credential.

Amount: $3,000

Deadline: February 8, 2025

"Reach for the Stars” scholarships

Category: Reel Money Courses - Film Finance Course. This course provides cutting edge film finance education for students interested in careers in film/TV, dram, finance, accounting, economics, business, sociology, law, entertainment , and more. The course is fully online and self-paced and is approved by the State Bar Associations of California, Louisiana, Georgia, and Nevada for continuing education credit. It is also accepted by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), as well by the Board for Certified Financial Planners.

Gilman-McCain scholarships

Category: The Gilman-McCain Scholarship application is also open! Receive $5,000 if you're a child or spousal dependent of an active duty military member and receive any type of Title IV Federal Financial Aid to go abroad. Gilman-McCain applicants are also eligible for the supplemental Critical Need Language Awards (of up to $3,000), and the STEM supplemental awards (of up to $1,000).

Amount: $5,000 up to $8,000

Deadline: March 6th, 2025

Outside Scholarship Funding

 

If you have been awarded a scholarship from an agency outside of San Diego City College, and the Scholarship Office hasn’t received your check, contact the agency and ask them to:

  • Send your scholarship check as soon as possible
  • Make the check payable to “San Diego City College”
  • Include your student ID number and full name in the memo line on the check
  • Mail the check to: San Diego City College

If YOU received the check directly from the outside agency and it is payable to San Diego City College:

  • Write your full name and student ID number on the check if it is not already printed on the check
